Welcome back to the 2022-2023 school year!

Centennial staff are excited to be welcoming all our students back to school on Tuesday, September 6th! We invite students to arrive to school at 8:20am.

As communicated yesterday, families will not receive class placement information via School Day as they have in previous years. As such, we wish to share our plan to receive our students on Tuesday morning.

Staff will be outside with class lists starting at 8:20am to greet students. We will be directing our Grade 7 students to proceed to the gym where they will be greeted by their teacher and introduced to their classmates.

Grade 8 students will be greeted by their teacher and introduced to their classmates outside on the tarmac.

We will have plenty of staff with class lists outside and inside greeting students and making sure they get connected with their teacher and classmates.

Once students are connected with their teacher, they will proceed to their homeroom. During the first block (Periods 1-4), students will remain in their homeroom where time will be taken to further build relationships with their teacher and classmates. This will also be when we distribute and review timetables, distribute Chromebooks, assign lockers, and answer any questions students have about Centennial.

For the remaining periods in the day, students will be escorted by their teacher to their next class as per their timetable. We are excited to return to a rotary schedule where students will rotate to the classes they have throughout the day as per their timetable. But again, staff will be assisting them to get to where they need to be.

Below is some information to help students come prepared on the first day of school:

  1. We have two 40 minute Nutrition Breaks every day when students eat lunch and then proceed outside for socializing, fresh air, and exercise. Students should come to school prepared with food for both Nutrition Breaks as well as a water bottle. We will be operating our Nutrition for Learning food program again this year where students can access additional food during Nutrition Breaks if needed.
  2. We invite students to come prepared with some pens and pencils, a binder, some lined paper, and a calculator. Teachers will inform students of any additional materials they require as the first week continues.
  3. Our Phys Ed staff will communicate the ordering and distribution of Centennial Phys Ed uniforms (shorts and t-shirt) in the coming days.
  4. We are excited to be returning to the use of lockers. Due to the number of lockers we have available, grade 7 students will share a locker with a classmate. Grade 8 students will have their own locker. We encourage all students to come with their own combination lock (please avoid locks requiring a key). We have a limited supply of locks we can sell for $9.00 each. We will distribute those locks as needed and then let you know when School Day is up and running to collect payment.
  5. As previously communicated, this is a reminder that transportation for students in our Congregated Enrichment Class and in our Congregated ACE class will not begin until Monday, September 12th. (Transportation for all other students is set to begin on Tuesday, September 6th). If parents of students in either of these congregated programs are unable to get their child school for the first week, we kindly ask that you contact our attendance line and let us know.  You can reach our attendance line at (519) 885-5660 press 1 or you can email us at cnw-attendance@wrdsb.ca. This is also a friendly reminder to all parents to please contact us whenever your child will be absent from school.
  6. Students will be coming home on Tuesday with a Data Verification Form (printed on blue paper). We ask that parents review the information on this page and update any changes as needed. Please sign and return this form with your child to their homeroom teacher by Friday, September 9th. Additional forms for parents to be aware of will become available on School Day once that is operational. Stay tuned on that.
  7. We strongly encourage all parents to access stswr.ca to confirm transportation details for their child if they will be travelling by school bus.
  8. Attendance reminder, if your child will be absent, late, or will be leaving early from school, please call our attendance line at (519) 885-5660 press 1 or you can email us at cnw-attendance@wrdsb.ca. We appreciate your support in communicating this to us!
  9. If students are coming to school with a cell phone, we kindly ask that phones are either turned off or set to silent mode and secured in their locker during the school day, including Nutrition Breaks. We appreciate your support with this.

Again, we can’t wait to see all our students bright and early on Tuesday morning!
