Sources of Strength Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council (WRSPC)

We are excited to share that the WRSPC will be at Centennial (W) tomorrow and Thursday to deliver a 60-minute Mental Health Promotion presentation to grade 8 HPE classes.  In alignment with Ontario’s 2019 Curriculum for Grades 1-8: Health and Physical Education, the presentation promotes the concept that “well-being is influenced not only by the absence of problems and risks but by the presence of factors that contribute to healthy growth and development”. Recognizing that grade 8 is an important transitional year for youth, the goal is to support well-being by highlighting factors that contribute to healthy growth and development.

The presentation balances speaking about mental health and mental health promotion with providing education and awareness for suicide prevention. When discussing suicide, best practice guidelines for safe conversations and a trauma-informed approach will be taken to these discussions to mitigate risks of harm. As suggested in the HPE curriculum, the presentations conclude with hope and information about seeking help. As an additional support, we will have our Social Worker and Child and Youth Worker available for youth during and after the presentation.
